Explanation / Answer

Hi,

Please find the answer as follows:

Part 1:

Goodwill = Purchase Price - Fair Market Value of Net Assets = 560 - (610-160) = 110 million

Part 2:

Impairment Loss = Since the FMV of Harman (540) is less than the Book Value of Net Assets (Including Goodwill) (558), there is an impairment.

Implied Goodwill = FMV - Fair Market Value of Net Assets (Excluding Goodwill) = 540 - 480 = 60 million

Impairment Loss = Implied Goodwill - Actual Goodwill = 60 - 110 = 50 million

Part 3:

Impairment Loss Dr. 50 million

Goodwill Cr. 50 million

Thanks.
