Question

You have three pairs of spheres. Pair A consists of two conducting spheres, pair B of two nonconducting spheres, and pair C of one nonconducting sphere and one conducting sphere. All spheres have the same charge q added to them, and in each pair the two spheres are separated by the same distance d.

a) Rank the magnitudes of the electric forces between the two spheres of each pair when q ispositive on both spheres.

b) Rank the magnitudes of the electric forces between the two spheres of each pair when q isnegative on both spheres.

c) Rank the magnitudes of the electric forces between the two spheres of each pair when q ispositive on one sphere in the pair and negative on the other.

Explanation / Answer

From Gauss's law we can prove that Electric field at distance d from center of sphere is kQ/d2 and it's true for both conducting and non conducting sphere.Difference between conducting and non conducting sphere arises when electric field is analyzed inside the spheres.

So in this case , electric force would be same for all which is kq2/d2

a) FA = FB=FC

b) FA = FB=FC

c) FA = FB=FC
