Question

Susan works in a real estate office that is equipped with up-to-date copiers, scanners, and printers. She is frequently the only employee working in the office in the evenings and often has spare time to do personal work. She has begun to use the office equipment for her children’s school reports and for her husband’s business. Do you think Susan’s use of the office equipment is harmless, or is she behaving unethically? Why? If you believe her behavior is unethical, what controls could be in place to prevent it? Have you ever used office resources for personal tasks? Under what conditions could such use of office resources be justified?

Explanation / Answer

The behavious of Susan in using office equipment for personal use in unethical.

Use of Office Equipemnt for personal use- Unethical. Reason:

1. Using the Office working hours to get the personal work done or spare time in which she can do other office work

2. It may create an embarrassing situation, if such usage gets into the knowledge of seniors

3. Other employee may also start using the office equipment for personal use

4. If she is not stopped from doing this, she may increase these things/usage

These days copiers etc are coming with meter reading where we can notice these readings to check unwanted usage.

I have never used the office equipment for my personal use.

These usage are justified when you have taken the permission for usage from your senior and these usage eben after permission are not very frequent.
