Apgar score is a test done on newborn immediately after birth. This test is done to check the baby's heart rate, muscle tone and other signs to see if medical care is needed. It usually done twice; once 1 minute soon after birth and another 5 minutes after birth. If there is any medical indication it is repeated again.
Apgar stands for:
A: Appearance- skin colour
P: Pulse – heart rate
G: Grimace response- reflexes
A: Activity- muscle tone
R: Respiration- breathing rate and effort
It is scored from 10 and 0. A baby who score 7 and above is said to be normal and healthy. A lower score indicates a need for emergency care.
