Explanation / Answer

MRSA stands for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. And VRE stands for Vancomycin-resistant enterococci.

Both are bacteriomes that cause infections in the human body. And it is important to learn about them and its role in surgery as it is difficult to treat this bacterium due to its resistant capacity to most of the antibiotics.

Antibiotics are substances derived from the metabolic products present in the culture media upon which are grown certain living organisms.

3. There are several tests available to diagnose Tuberculosis.

a. Mantoux Test or also called Mendel-Mantoux test

b.Acid Fastness is the physical property certain bacteria. Very few structures are acid-fast; this makes staining for acid-fastness particularly useful in diagnosis.

c.Sputum culture is the best way to diagnose active TB. But a sputum culture can take 1 to 8 weeks to provide results.

4. Culture and Sensitivity

A culture is a test helps identify microorganisms like bacteria or a fungus that can cause an infection. A sensitivity test checks to see what kind of medicine, such as an antibiotic, will work best to treat the illness or infection. And the test also provides information to the antibiotics the organism is resistant to.

This test guides the doctor with information as what medicines will influence the organism to treat any infections for the patient.

5. Importance of Gram stain during a Surgery

A gram stain test provides information about a few bacteria as quickly as 30 minutes to 2 -4 hours, unlike a Culture and sensitivity test that takes 48 -72 hours. With the diagnostic test results in hand, the surgeon prescribes antibiotics as a preventive method for infections that could be caused during surgery.

6. Antibiotics when correctly used, attacks the cell wall of the bacteria, thus slowing down the synthesizing effect of the organism. And further the cellwall called peptidoglycan becomes weak and is destroyed.

7. Difference between Bactericidal and bacteriostatic

Bactericidal kills bacteria. 'Cidal' means kill

Bacteriostatic slows down the growth of bacteria.'Static' means to be stationary or to slow down
