Question

If the distance between each line is one mm and if there are 1000 micrometers (mu m) in one mm, what is the total width (diameter) of the field in mum? (In case there is some distance evident after the last line to the right, you can estimate the fraction of a mm beyond the line.) Low power field diameter = mm = mu m Knowing field diameter enables the observer to estimate the size of an object in the field. For example, if the object takes up half the field at a given power of magnification, it must be 50% of the field diameter at that power. Obtain a prepared slide of foraminifera. These are ancient marine protozoa that have chambered shells of calcium carbonate. The shells may be spiral or circular in shape and are found in large masses on the sea floor. In fact, one of the largest deposits of foraminifera shells is in the chalky cliffs of Dover, England. Today, foraminifera make up part of the ocean plankton. Using the field diameter measurement, estimate the length of at least three different organisms at low power. Organism 1 = mm Organism 2 = mm Organism 3 = mm

Explanation / Answer

I do not see the complete question for A. It is relating to a previous step, so the numbers need to match whatever you measured for the width of your visual field using the ruler inside of the ocular lens. This does vary from microscope to microscope - you can get that number from a classmate though, they should be more or less standard for the lab you are in. B. Foraminifera are much less than 1mm in length (less than 1000um). They are usually 60-100um in length; pick 3 numbers. I'd say write something like: 82um, 65um, 91um. Something random and out of order. Best of luck!
