Explanation / Answer
Answer;
1. Amount of the capitalization of retained earnings for the stock dividend = Number of shares for stock dividend *
Number of Shares issued as dividend = 20% of (35000Shares -3000 Shares Treasury) = 20% *37000 Shares = 7400 Shares
Hence Amount of the capitalization of retained earnings for the stock dividend = 7400 Shares * 12 = $88800
2. Per share cost of the treasury stock purchased =Cost of the treasury stock Purchased / Number of treasury shares
= $35000 / 4000 Shares = $8.75 Per Share
3. Calculation of Net income:
Retained Earnings as on Dec. 31, 2014 = $420000
Less: Cash Dividend (Jan. 5) = $0.60*35000 Shares = $22050
Less: Cash Dividend (Apr. 5) = $0.60*(35000-4000 Shares) = $18600
Less: Cash Dividend (July. 5) = $0.60*(35000-000 Shares) =$18600
Less: Stock Dividend (Aug. 14) (as calculated above) = $88800
Less: Cash Dividend (Oct. 5) = $0.60*(35000-4000+7400 Shares) = $23040
Less: Retained Earnings as on Dec. 31, 2013 = $320000
Net Income = $283840
