Our group is having a problem with the following assignment. We were given the category of "Hypothyroidism with a history of angina". We need to come up with a problem statement etc. that has plenty of scholarly references we can use (10) within the last 10 years. Here is an example she gave us followed by the instructions on the assigment. We really need some ideas on the research problem statement. Example:

Research Problem Statement and Significance of Research Problem Paper

Purposes: The purpose of this assignment is to develop a research problem statement and to outline its significance prior to completing the integrative literature review paper. A secondary purpose is to receive approval of the problem and feedback regarding the problem and its significance. This assignment addresses course objectives 2 and 4.

Guidelines and Overview: A research problem relevant to professional nursing will be introduced and described in writing. The significance of this problem for nursing will be outlined with bullet points; the bullet points must not be complete sentences.

Content of Paper:

Clearly state the research problem in one sentence (either interrogative or declarative). The problem statement must have at least one independent and one dependent variable as well as a target population.

Tips for stating a research problem for the scholarly synthesis paper: Try to use variables and target populations that are not restrictive.

For example, a very narrow problem statement is: How does the use of therapeutic touch relieve pain in school age children with brain tumors?

An example of a more “open” and feasible problem statement is: How do complementary therapeutic modalities affect unpleasant symptoms in children with cancers?

Your success in writing this scholarly synthesis is dependent on finding at least 10 published research articles that address the question. If the problem statement is too narrow, you will not be able to find sufficient published research.

Tip for stating a research problem so it is applicable to nursing. Frame the problem in terms of nursing’s scope of practice rather than medicine’s scope of practice. Advanced practice nurses and nurse educators retain this scope of practice in their expanded roles.

An example of a research problem statement with a focus on nursing’s scope of practice: What nursing interventions are most effective in reducing cholesterol levels (or even risks for heart disease) in adults?

Provide bullet points that outline the background of the research topic and problem as well as the problem’s significance to nursing. Significance can be supported with epidemiological statistics, theoretical approaches, professional nursing mandates or standards of practice, and identified gaps in the literature.

Include citations and references in APA style

This paper should be no longer than one and half double-spaced page but should have a title page.

NOTE: Prior to submitting the final EBP scholarly synthesis paper, the research problem statement must be approved.
