Question

Match the numbers to the appropriate sentences. Note that some terms will remain unused and some may be used more than once. Imagine that the Moon's orbital plane is parallel and precisely aligned with Earth's orbital plane. How many solar eclipses would occur in a six-month period? Again, consider that the Moon's orbit is parallel and aligned with Earth's orbit. How many lunar eclipses would occur in a six-month period? Now, imagine that the Moon's orbit is aligned perpendicular to Earth's orbit. How many lunar eclipses would occur in a six-month period? Again, if the Moon's orbit is aligned perpendicular to Earth's orbit, how many solar eclipses would occur in a six-month period?

Explanation / Answer

Answer : As solar eclipse occurs when the Moon’s shadow falls on the Earth means moon lies between sun and earth, whereas lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon means earth lie between sun and moon. The moon's orbit is tilted about 5 degree with respect to earth orbit. That is the reason for solar and lunar eclipse happens irregularly.
1: According to the condition there would be 6 solar eclipse in every six month period because if plane would be aligned parallel the interval of lying moon in the same line would also be regular that is one month.

2: According to the condition there would be 6 lunar eclipse in every six month period the reason is same as discussed above.

3: According to the given condition, there would be only 1 lunar eclipse in every six month period because the aligment would lie on th same plane only once in a six month period.

4: According to the given condition, there would be only 1 solar eclipse in every six month period, same reason as discussed above.
