Question

Create a specific energy diagram that shows subcritical and supercritical flows for the stream cross -section discharge found below, using equation

E= ((q/w)^2 / 2gd^2) + d

Discuss what this diagram tells us about the different types of flow. what is the critical flow depth ?

I used that equation to get the values listed below for specific energy - however when i plot those values and the depth to create the specific energy diagram it does not look correct (see below), What am i doing wrong ?

Explanation / Answer

Sub Critical Flow in which the depth of the channel is greater than critical depth, velocity of flow is less than critical velocity and slope of channel is also less than the critical slope. In sub critical flow the channel is deep has slow flow.

Super Critical Flow has depth of the channel less than critical depth, flow velocity greater than critical velocity and slop greater than critical slope. In super critical slope channel has shallow water depth and rapid flows

I used that equation to get the values listed below for specific energy - however when i plot those values and the depth to create the specific energy diagram it does not look correct (see below), What am i doing wrong ?

Because the data given in the table represents only sub critical flow and also the diagram represents only sub critical part of flow. Super critical data required to represent the data correctly.
