PLLLLLLLLEASE HELP ASAP
In a paragraph (3 to 5 sentences), please explain why the rising CO2 levels in our atmosphere are thought to be likely to increase the deaths of shallow water coral colonies in the future. Be sure to explain what effect the CO2 levels have on the temperature of the atmosphere (1 point) B) How the temperature of the atmosphere affects the temperature of the water in which the corals are growing (1 point, and C) how changes in water temperature are likely to affect the corals. 1/2 to 1 point will be deducted for poor spelling, incomplete sentences, and/or improper grammar.Explanation / Answer
A) Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere acts as a blanket preventing the heat loss from the surface of the earth, trapping the heat and hence it raises the global temperature. This process has been termed as greenhouse effect. Hence increasing amounts of CO2 will increase the amount of heat trapped in the atmosphere, hence raising the global temperatures.
B) The temperature of the atmosphere, warms up the ocean water. Even a small rise in the ocean water temperature will cause the polar ice cap to melt and thus increasing the sea water level at the places where these corals grow.
C) Rising sea water level will inhibit the growth of the corals in the following ways: With increase in the sea level, there will be more sedimentation that will make the water turbid and this will interfere with the photosynthesis and other reef processes. The increased erosion and transport of fine sediment will just cover up the submerged corals, inhibiting their rate of growth and other accumulation processes.
All the best :)
