Every stream, regardless of size, has its own watershed. Watersheds are typically separated from one another by drainage divides (elevated land surfaces such as ridges or mountain ranges). All water added to the stream comes from runoff within the watershed, unless humans pipe, pump, or divert water from one watershed to another. The various types of land uses in a watershed can greatly affect the quality of water in streams. Human activities such as clearing of vegetation, altering of floodplains, modifying the ter- rain, urbanizing, agriculture, etc., can result in an increase in runoff and additional sources of pollutants. Vegetation slows the rate of runoff and can result in increased infiltration. Water that infiltrates is more likely to be filtered or purified by natural processes in the soil. The Upper Chattahoochee watershed supplies the metro Atlanta area with 70% of its water supply (approximately 450 million gallons per day) (www.ucriverkeeper.org/river-facts,php) DeKalb County is authorized to withdraw a maximum of 140 million gallons of water per day from the Chattahoochee River. Sewage treatment plants in Metro Atlanta release an av erage of 250 million gallons of treated wastewater into Lake Lanier and the Chattahoochee each day PROCEDURE In this lab, you will identify the watershed in which your campus is located. You will iden- tify the physical characteristics of the watershed as well as identify possible sources of pollution. Using various criteria, you will assess the "health of the stream closest to your campus (again identifying possible sources of pollution).
