Question

KEY LEARNING After reading the chapter, you should be able to: Describe the chemical composition and physical structure of the ocean. Identify the components of the coastal environment, define mean sea level and explain the actions of tides. Describe wave motion at sea and near shore, and explain coastal straighten- ing and coastal landforms. Describe barrier beaches and islands and their hazards as they relate to human settlement. Describe the nature of coral reefs and coastal wetlands, and assess human impacts on these living systems. Describe eolian transport of dust and sand, and discuss eolian erosion and the resultant landforms.

Explanation / Answer

Chemical composition of oceans:It has mainly Nacl with ratio (Cl:55%,Na:31%),SO4:7.7%,Mg:3.5% and Ca.K are also present.

Physical structure of oceans: we can describe the oceans physical structure by dividing ocean water in layers.

Mixing Zone(mixing waters)-This lies 2% of ocean surface from top to bottom layers.
Thermocline Zone-This lies upto 18% of ocean layers from top to bottom,in this we can discuss about salinity of oceans.

Deep cold-It precence rest of 80% ocean layers.
Finally reached ocean floor with sediments, basalt rocks are present etc..
