The APOD http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap031231.html for 2003 December 31 shows the images of the cosmic microwave background radiation made by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy probe (WMAP) where the whole sky is shown divided into two hemispheres. I understand that a principal goal of the various satellites that have studied the CMB is to establish the typical size of the blotches in the map. Why do we want to know what the typical size is and what does the size of the average blotch tell us about the history of the universe?

answer - wilkinson microwave anisotropic probe was a space air craft which measured difference across the sky in the temperature of cosmic microwave background - the radiant heat remaining from the big bang. it is used to determine the geometry, content and evolution of universe. it measued the tiny fluctuctuation in the cosmic microwave background radiation (which was the oldest light of universe ) and produced the first fine resolution full sky map of microwave sky. it has determined that age of universe is 13.77 billion years. it also determined that the dark energy in the form of cosmological constant makes up the 74 % of universe
the observation made on december 31, 2003 the sky was divided into 2 hemisphere part. we want to know the size of the blotches because by the determination the size of blotches we can imgine what was the size of the universe in the past. it these voids coulde be the imprint of another universe in our uinverse.it is also used in the determine the cosmic structure . this supervoid has the radius of 1.8 billion year light year and it is centered 3 billion year from our galaxies
