Question

Also, all else being equal, increasing the % crystallinity of a thermoplastic polymer will lead to what changes in properties?

a) decreased ductility

b) increased ductility

c) increased elastic modulus

d) both A and C

Please explain the resoning behind the solution

Choose the option which correctly arranges microconstituents of steel in order of increasing yield strength, oy: a. Tempered Martensite Bainite Pearlite b. Bainite k Tempered Martensite k Pearlite c. Tempered Martensite Bainite Martensite d. Pearlite Bainite Tempered Martensite

Explanation / Answer

Perlite < Bainite < Tempered Martensite

Crystallinity is the measure of how closely the atoms or molecules are packed in a material. An increase in the percentage of crystallinity means, the atoms or molecules has lesser freedom to move and thus it results in a reduction in ductility. Elastic modulus is the ratio of force applied to the deformation produced due to the application of force. In a polymer with high percentage of crystallinity, for a particular amount of deformation ,Large force has to be applied when compared with a polymer with lesser percentage of crystallinity. So elastic modulus increases with with crystallinity. Both A and C are correct options.
