Question
You've been retained by NASA to design a fish tank (quality protein source) for a proposed Mars orbit way-station for the up and coning Mars expeditions. The way station design will be a 300-foot diameter circular ring. To simulate gravity, the way-station will rotate at a revolution per minute. The station's "artificial gravity" is determined by normal acceleration, by shown below. a_n = V^2/r The fish tank will be bolted to the outside wall of the way-station. The water in the tank will be 20 feet deep. The tank is open to the atmospHere, Determine a_s the way-station artificial gravity. Determine y_s the specific weight of the water in apace. Determine the pressure at the bottom of the tank. Name the two fish in the tank.Explanation / Answer
a) Acceleration shall be generated due to rotation of the ring.
Acceleration a = V2 / r
Velocity V = x D x N / 60
D-Ring diameter, N - No. of rotation per minute(rpm)
Diameter=30 feet = 9.144 meters
Velocity V = x 9.144 x 4 / 60 = 1.92m/s
Hence acceleration, a = 1.922/(9.144/2) = 0.8 m/s2
b) Specific weight = Density x acceleration = 1000 x 0.8 = 800 N/m3
c) Static pressure at bottom of tank
= Density × acceleration x Depth
=1000 x 0.8 x 6.096 (20feet = 6.096 m)
=4876 Pa = 4.87 Kpa
d) Space fish (Anonymous)
