Question

1. A new sustainable business and industry co-op to help new companies develop is expanding in Paris. They are especially concerned about environmental sustainability. Wanting to make their newly acquired building and operations more environmentally friendly, they seek your advice on four measures: Un. They bought an old building, which they plan to renovate. Should they use any synthetic building materials? These materials, they're aware, may be manufactured using more energy and nonrenewable resources. Can your client can justify it environmentally?

Deux. The building will have a café, naturellement. The café will provide plastic food containers and cups for those who don't bring their own cups and plates. Should these plastics be recyclable, or should they be compostable, if they are considering only those options?

Trois. Although the building gets good natural light, it does need electric light for some areas, and for those who work after hours. What kind of light bulbs would you recommend, and why? Quatre. The co-op members—mostly young, hip Parisiennes—plan to have a small fleet of two-passenger company cars for their members to use as needed on short-distance (up to ~40 miles/64 kilometers) to locations not accessible by public transportation. Should they use purely electric plug-in vehicles, or very high-mileage diesel or gasoline cars (other, perhaps, than diesel VWs)? Hybrids, for now, are not an option. Assume rapid-charging stations are readily available. Please show how you arrived at each recommendation.

2. (FOR THIS QUESTION, ANSWER EITHER A OR B.) a. An industrial entity hired you to be their chief environmental officer. What they produce can be whatever you choose. Describe the operation: what are its components or stages? What materials are used? What types of wastes are generated? What is your waste management plan and approach for protecting the environment and human health? or b. As I write this, U.S. secretary of state John Kerry is leading the Obama administration’s effort to restart stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. Despite the chronic failure of past efforts, many still hope for resolution, because it beats the alternative. There's probably more in the media on the Israeli-Palestinian issue than on global climate change. Israelis, and Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, live in an area not much larger than New Jersey. They are linked, however uncomfortably, by their shared environment. There's even been some progress on joint solutions to environmental problems—see, for example, Israel, Palestine and the environment. i. Describe three environmental problems they face. Include some problems they face separately, and some they face jointly. Your descriptions should be about one solid paragraph each, so that someone unfamiliar with the issues, such as your new boss from the quiz, could understand them. ii. Discuss, in detail, one of the three problems you described above in terms of environmental systems—where and in which sphere does the problem originate, in that region? Which other spheres are involved, from origin of the problem to the ecological and/or human health effects? Please cite your information sources for a or b.

Explanation / Answer

synthetic building materials should never be used because after the completion of tenure of the building, when it is demolished, the building materials are non biodegradable not are they recycleable. so the dumping site will cause environmental hazard.

they should avoid using plastic cups and plates as far as possible. if they are to use plastic, that should be composable because the dumping site of plastics will not cause hindrance to groundwater flow or percolation. also flaure and fauna can thrive through composable plastic dumps.

i should recommend low power consumung energy efficient bulbs eg led so that they give maximum illumination for minimum power consumption. electricity generation causes a lot of environmental pollution especially air pollution in form of CO2 emission as majority of electricity is produced from burning of coal.

for transportation electric vehicles only should be used and also car pooling can be effective to make maximum utilization of resources. gasolene cars produce CO and CO2 which causes global warming.
