Question

[Course - Air Pollution // Assigned Book - Introduction to Particle Technology by Martin Rhodes]

Problem:

Dusty gas from a cement kiln is blown through a cyclone with 75% efficiency and then an ESP in series. The inlet gas to the cyclone has a dust (solid) loading of 75 g/ m3.
a) If the overall solid removal of 99% is required for the cement plant, what is the needed efficiency of the ESP?
b) If the gas flow rate to the cyclone and the ESP increases by 10%, estimate the new efficiency for the cyclone, the ESP and the overall solid removal process.
Note: State assumption(s) that may be relevant for the solution approach/equation used.

Explanation / Answer

a. Answer

1.Assuming an initial feed of 100%, determine the percentage of thestream fed to the ESP.

100% - (100% x 0.99) = 1%

2.Determine final composition after ESP.

1% - (1% x 0.75) = 0.25%

3.Determine overall efficiency

hoverall=(initial–final)/ initial

= (100% - 0.25%) /100% =99.75%
