Question
Background - Understanding the concept of pressure is very important to understanding subsequent concepts in the course. The idea that air has weight may be foreign to you. Also, it is important to remember that your weight represents a Force.
Some important equations will help you with your task:
Pressure = force / unit area
Pressure = weight / unit area
To do this problem you need to know your weight and convert a square foot to the correct number of square inches.
Your Tasks:
1) Calculate the pressure your body exerts on one square foot, but calculate it in PSI (pounds per square inch)
2) Use a source to determine atmospheric pressure at Sea Level (in PSI) and determine if your pressure (in PSI) is greater than, equal to, or less than, that of the atmosphere.
3) Indicate whether or not you are surprised by your answer to #2, and WHY.
Explanation / Answer
1) My weight force my body = 80 kgf = 800 N = 180 pounds
So pressure = 180/ 1 = 180 pounds per square foot (
= 1.25 pounds per square inches.
2) Atmospheric pressure is calculated by barometer and is quantified at sea leve as 1 atm
= 101325 pa = 14.7 pounds per square inches., so it is greater by 34 times than that of pressure exerted on earth by me.
3) I'm surprised by this answer because When I stand on earth I feel I exert great amount of pressure, but 34 times than that pressure, air itself is exerting on earth.
