Question

Map UNIVERSITY PHYSICS Philip R. Kesten David L. Tauck Find the equivalent resistance of the combination of resistors shown in the figure. 42.0 Number 45.92 33.0 61.0 75.0 19.0 14.5 Previous Give Up & View Solution # Try Again Next Exit- Explanation Resistors that are arranged in series and in parallel can be combined to find an equivalent resistance. Resistors that are arranged in series have an equivalent resistance Req that is the simple sum of the individual resistances R,R2, etc. Resistors that are arranged in parallel have an equivalent resistance Reg that can be found by the following equation involving the sum of the reciprocals of the individual resistances R, R2, etc. R R R, RN eq

Explanation / Answer

resistors 42, 75 are connected in parallel. so,

        R = [1/42 + 1/75]-1 = 26.923 Ohms

this resistance is connected in series with 33 and 61 resistors, so

    R = 26.923 + 33 +61 = 120.923 Ohms

this resistance is connected in parallel with 14.5 resistor, so

R = [1/120.923 + 1/14.5]-1 = 12.947 Ohms

this resistance is connected in series with 19 Ohms resistor, so

   R = 12.947 + 19 = 31.947 Ohms = 31.95 Ohms
