Questions: You may need to do a sttle research to answer some of these 1. The fve most common elements in the Sun are H, He, O, C, and Ne. Which of these elements have sclar absorption ines 2, why are some of the elements in #1 not visble as solar absorption lines? 3. Do you see lines from other elements that do not belong to the five most common? Which ones? Why are they in the Sun's spectrum? What is the difference between an absorption line and an emission line? Where might you see an emission ine? 5. Certain gases present in the Earth's atmosphere ike CO2 do not show up as Telluric lines. Why is this? Hint: think about the entire electromagnetic spectrum 6, if you were on Mars, where the atmosphere is predom nanty Co,, would you see the same absorption lines as you would on Earth? Why/why not? 7. Why are some solar absorption ines more or less intense than other lines? Rod Lee & Bob Ewing

Explanation / Answer

1) hydrogen(lines within the range of 650nm to 400nm), helium( lines within the range of 500 to 450nm), neon( lines within the range of 600 to 650 nm).

2) C and O atoms absorbs photons in the infrared region, hence it is not observable.

3) we can see lines of sulfur and iron. it is because these elements are also present in the sun in a lesser quantity

4)If a gas cloud of atoms has is in a cooler state as compared to its background and If a photon from the background hits an atom and the energy of the photon is the same as the gap between two electron energy levels in the atom, then the electron in the lower energy level can absorb the photon and jump up to the higher energy level and we can see a dark line in the EM spectrum called absorption line. If the photon energy does not correspond to the difference between two energy levels then the photon will not be absorbed.

On the contrary, if the gas cloud is hotter than its background then the electrons in the atoms will relax into the lower states from higher excited states and in the process will emit photons of energy equal to the energy gap between the levels and we can observe glowing lines of that particular energy in the EM spectrum and these lines are called emmision lines.

5) Telluric lines are due to absorption of visible light of certain wavelengths coming from the sun by the earth's atmospheric atoms and molecules.carbon dioxide molecules absorb photons which are having wavelength in infrared range. hence we can not see the absorption line(telluric line) in the visible EM spectrum.

6) absorption lines would be much fainter in Mars as the key elements causing absorption like hydrogen and helium are very scarce in its atmosphere.

7) since the presence of the elements in our atmosphere are not of the same ratio, hence all the absorption lines are not of the same intensity. The absorption lines will depend on the concentration of the elemen present in the atmosphere-higher the concentration, more intense is the absorption line
