Question
1 U-235 Fission Cross Section When a low energy neutron scatters off a U-235 nucleus it experiences some complex potential, V. The imaginary part of the potential can be described by Im(V)As(x) where A-42 MeV fm3. The fm3 appears to cancel the units in the 3D delta function which are fm-3 Plot the microscopic absorption cross section for the given A as a function of neutron energy. The cros section should have units of barns and the neutron energy should have units of MeV from 10-11-10-7 MeV. Use a log-log plot. On the same graph plot the microscopic fission cross section data for U-235. You may use resources such as NNDC, KAERI or ENDF. Points will be taken off if you do not clearly label your axes, units and data series.Explanation / Answer
A) Energy released = ((235.043930+1.0086649)-(143.922953+88.917630+(3*1.0086649))) amu
=>Energy released = (0.186017amu) * (931.5MeV/amu) = 173.275 MeV
B) Energy released per gram of 235U = 173.275*1*(1/235)*(6.023*1023) = 4.441*1023 MeV/g
