Question
Kleinberg, Ch. 2 Exercise 2
Let's think about this example in more detail, and in particular consider the following questions. What mechanisms for providing news to the public will tend to accentuate this power-law effect, causing the most widely-read articles to be even more widely-read? What mechanisms will tend to diminish the power-law effect, more evenly balancing readership across more and less widely-read articles? Give an explanation for your answer.
This is an open-ended question, in the sense that the range of possible correct answers is quite broad; also, it is fine for your answer to be informally stated, provided the explanation is clear.
f (k)Explanation / Answer
Possible mechanisms for providing news to accenture this power law effect are:
1. The news should be published in a section whose current popularity is high or which already has a high readability. According to this "rich-get-richer rule", the rate at which the popularity of a news grow is proportional to the current popularity of the section and increases exponentially with time. The more well known some one is, the more likely you will hear his name in any conversation. The same rule is excercised while advertising products of big brands.
2. Lesser the ambiguity in the news, more will be its popularity.
3. If the news matter can be linked directly to anyone's personal interest or is going to effect a person then its popularity increases.
4. Negative news also attracts more popularity. Stressing on the negative aspects of a news can enhance its popularity.
5. Detailed analysis and debates on a news topic also increases its popularity.
The mechanism which can reduce the power law effect are:
1, Publishing a news in a less popular page can diminish the power law effect in the popularity of the news.
2. Imporper analysis of a news item reduces readers / viewers interest over the news item and thus, adversely effects the popularity of the news.
3. Presenting a news item with a more popular news can also adversely effect its popularity.
