Question

(20) 1. On vour own paper, answer T if statement is completely true or F if any part of the statement is false. In an elastic scattering of a neutron from a nucleus, a. a neutron cannot exceed its initial kinetic energy in a scattering interaction. b. the neutron binding energy is not transferred to the nucleus. c. the nucleus can be left in an excited state. d. kinetic energy is always conserved e. binding energV 1S Conserved f. the nucleus recoils just a little g. the reaction is exoergic. h. the reaction is endoergic. i. the scattered neutron is always colored blue. j. charge is sometimes conserved.

Explanation / Answer

a. T

b. T

c. T

d. T

e. F

f. T

g. F

h. T

i. T

j. F

In elastic scattering the charge, linear momentum and kinetic energy is conseved. Neutron needs energy (endothermic reaction) for such a nuclear reaction and transferred some of its kinetic energy to nucleus and nucleus recoil less due to its high mass than neutron. This transfer of energy is not bindind energy of neutron. Binding energy changes in the reaction.
