The civil war produced quite different results in the north than south. Away from the revenge of the war,there was little rebuilding to do. The Northern economy actually benifited from the conflict. There were new market for products used by the Union Army. Northern factories were producing more than before. The north was simmering with new ideas and constant change. During the war, the need of weapons and other metal products has caused boost in steel production, raw mateiral were plentiful and now mining and refining the meatls became the backbone of North. While in South, problems arises after civil war including; ruined land, confederate money was worthless, no law or authority, banks and economy was ruined, the transportation sysytem was completely in disorder, loss of workers and lack of governance at all levels. Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner were the first to call the years after Civil War is " gilded age". By this meant that the period was gilttering on the surface by corrupt underneath. in the popular view, the period of late 19th century was the period of greed and guile of rapacious Robber Barons and corporate buccaneers, of shady business practices and scandal- plagued politics. The gilded age as an era of corruption, conspicuous consumption and unfettered capitalism. It is an era when agrarian society was transformed into and urban society dominated by industrial corporations. The late 19th century saw a creation of amodern industrial economy. a national trasporation and communication system was created. The factories built by the Union to defeat the Confederacy were not shut down at the war's end. Industry had existed prior to the war. after the war, starting with the railroads, small business grew larger and larger. Thus, by the century's end, the nation's economy was dominated by a few very powerful individuals. The federal indian policy establishes the relationship between the united state government and Indian tribes within its borders. The constitution gives the federal government primary responsbility for dealing with tribes. Wrone periodizes federal policy towards Indian in six phases : coexistence(1789-1828), removal and reservations(1829-1886), assimilation(1887-1932), reorganization(1932-1945), termination(1946-1960) and self determination(1961-1985).
