temperature based on the known value at another. (5) 12. Consider the following reaction at 298.15 K, where the standard Gibbs energies of formation of carbon monoxide and oxygen in aqueous medium are -119.90 kJ mot1 and 16.4 kJ/mol respectively. 2 Co(aq) + O2(aq) = 2 CO2(aq) Calculate, a) The standard Gibbs energy of reaction. b) The equilibrium constant @ @ when the molalities of carbon monoxide, oxygen and carbon dioxide are 1.0 x 10-4 mol/kg, 1.5 x 10-4 mol/kg and 2.0 x 10-4 mol/kg respectively. Assume activity coefficients equal unity. (3) 19

Explanation / Answer

a) Standard gibbs free energy of the reaction = Sum of Gibbs free enrgy of formation of products - Sum of Gibbs free enrgy of formation of reactants

gibbs free energy of above reaction = 2*Gibbs free energy of CO2 (aq) - {(2*Gibbs free energy of CO(aq)) + Gibbs free energy of O2}

gibbs free energy of above reaction = 2*(-386.02) -{2*-119.90 + 16.4} = -548.64 KJ/mol

b) Equilibrium Constant can be calculated using the following equation:

G = -RTlnK

-548.64 = - 8.314 J/mol.K * 298.15 K* lnK

lnK = 0.2213, k= 1.2477
