Question

Please answer A, B, C, D, & E

IV. Two spinning plates Two identical platters, like the ones used in Experiment l, are shown. In this case, the platters rotate about the same axis with different angular velocities as shown. The upper plate will be lowered onto the lower plate, and they will quickly rotate together with the same angular velocity. A. Before the plate touch, what is the direction of the angular momentum of the top plate? B. Before the plates touch, what is the direction of the angular momentum of the bottom plate? C. After the top plate is lowered onto the bottom plate, what is the direction of the angular momentum of the combined top and bottom plate system? Explain your reasoning.

Explanation / Answer

the direction of angular momentum is given by the right hand rule

place ur fingers in the direction of rotation then the thumb gives the direction of the angular momentum

1st plate - upwards

2nd plate - downward

in this case the angular momentum will remain conserved as there is no external force on the system

hence

Iw = I1w1 + I2w2

Iw = angular momentum of the system at the end

I1w1 = angular momentum of 1st plate

I2w2 = angular momentum of 2nd plate

thus

Iw = I x 4w - I x 2w

wfinal = 2w

thus the final angular velocity = 2w

direction of rotation will be similar to plate 1 thus direction of angular momnetum = upwards

PS - negative sign is taken with I x 2w as the sense of rotaion is different
