Question
You set up a cannon on the edge of a cliff 350 m above a flat, sandy canyon floor. There cannon balls are launched from the cannon with the same initial speed of 40 m/s, but at different angles. The cannon balls are identical except for their color. A red ball is launched horizontally, a white ball is launched at a 30 degree angle above the horizontal and a blue ball is launched at a 60 degree angle above the horizontal. We use that the magnitude of the acceleration due to gravity as 10 m/s2. We ignore air resistance.
1) How long would it wake for the red cannon to strike the canyon floor? (s)
2) What is the acceleration of the red cannon ball while it is inside the cannon barrel, if the barrel is 1 m long?
3) What is the acceleration of the red cannon ball while it is inside the cannon barrel, if the barrel is 9 m long?
Explanation / Answer
1) delta Y = 1/2 a t^2
t = sqrt [2 delta y / a]
= sqrt [2 *-350 / -10]
= 8.37 sec
--------------------------------
2) v^2 = vo^2 + 2 a delta x
40^2 = 2 a (1)
a = 800 m/s2
--------------------------------
3)v^2 = vo^2 + 2 a delta x
40^2 = 2 a (9)
a = 88.89 m/s2
