Compute the work required to bring the following three charges from rest at an infinite separation to the following (x,y) locations: q1 = +2.00 mu C at (0.0, 0.0) m, q2 = +3.00 mu C at (1.0, 0.0) m, and q3 = +4.00 mu C at (0.0, 2,0) m. Assume the charges are initially at rest and separated by an infinite distance. After the charges in problem 1 are assembled the 2.00-mu C charge is released from rest What is its kinetic energy when it is infinitely far from the other two charges?

Explanation / Answer

1. work = sigma[KQq/r]

=9*10^9*(2*3/1+3*4/sqrt(1^2+2^2)+2*4/2)*10^-12

= 0.1383 J

2. Energy = P.E. = KQ(q1/r1+q2/r2)

= 9*10^9*2*10^-12*(3/1+4/2)

= 0.09 J
