Question
A 0.160kg glider is moving to the right on a frictionless, horizontal air track with a speed of 0.880m/s . It has a head-on collision with a 0.295kg glider that is moving to the left with a speed of 2.28m/s . Suppose the collision is elastic. a)Find the magnitude of the final velocity of the 0.160kg glider. b)Find the direction of the final velocity of the 0.160kg glider. a. to the right b. to the left c)Find the magnitude of the final velocity of the 0.295kg glider. d) Find the direction of the final velocity of the 0.295kg glider. a. to the right b. to the leftExplanation / Answer
By conservation of momentum
0.16*0.88 - 0.295*2.28 = 0.16*v + 0.295*u
0.16*v + 0.295*u = -0.5318
v = -3.32375 - 1.84375*u
By Conservation of Energy
0.5*{0.16*0.88^2 + 0.295*2.28^2} = 0.5*{0.16*v^2 + 0.295*u^2}
so
1.657432 = 0.16*v^2 + 0.295*u^2
Putting value of v
we get
1.65743 = 0.16*(3.32375 + 1.84375*u)^2 + 0.295*u^2
we get u = -0.0576 m/s
v = -3.218 m/s
a) 3.218 m/s
b) to left
