Question

1. State whether the following statements are true or false. Please justify your a. In an error-free data network, the IP packet received by IP layer at server b. Using multilevel signaling, it is possible to arbitrarily increase the bit rate answer and show all work, 120 pointsl is identical to that transmitted by the client at the physical layer by increasing the number of levels that each pulse carries. Frame error rates as seen at Layer 2 (data link layer) is always greater than or equal to bit error rate at Layer 1 (physical layer) c. d. For a given noise density and signal power, Shannon's channel capacity indicates that capacity is directly proportional to channel bandwidth. It is not necessary to use link-layer ARQ for TCP based applications since TCP already has an error control mechanism e. f. Given that the minimum Hamming Distance of Hamming(7,4) code discussed in class is 3, it cannot detect any more than 3 errors. g. Efficiency of CSMA/CD MAC is always better than Slotted-ALOHA In addition to verifying the IP header checksum of an incoming packet and forwarding the packet to an output node based on destination IP address, a typical IP router has to re-compute the header checksum before forwarding the IP packet from input node to output node. h. i. In a router with an M/M/1/K discipline, it is always good to increase the queue depth K since it reduces blocking probability. By inspecting Layer-2 MAC address, it is possible to uniquely identify the IP multicast address of an ongoing IP multicast session j.

Explanation / Answer

1. yes, (true): The Internet Protocol layer in the TCP/IP protocol stack is the first layer that introduces the virtual network abstraction that is the basic principle of the Internet model. All physical implementation details (ideally even though this is not quite true) are hidden below the IP layer. The IP layer provides an unreliable, connectionless delivery system. The reason why it is unreliable stem from the fact the protocol does not provide any functionality for error recovering for datagrams that are either duplicated, lost or arrive to the remote host in another order than they are send. If no such errors occur in the physical layer, the IP protocol guarantees that the transmission is terminated successfully.
