Question
You pick up a board of length 2.30 m and mass 11.50 kg. To do this, you exert a force upward with your left hand a distance LL=0.483 m from the end of the board as shown, and you need to exert a force with your right hand a distance LR=0.174 m from the end of the board. Assume the board to be in static equilibrium and that the board is symmetrical with the mass evenly distributed.
What force does the right hand need to exert to keep the board in static equilibrium? (you need to get both the magnitude and the direction)
What is the magnitude of the force that the left hand needs to exert to keep the board in static equilibrium?
Explanation / Answer
the mass acts at a distace 2.3/2=1.15m
let F1 be force upwards with left hand
and F2 be force upwards with right hand
so by force balance we get
F1+F2=11.5
and by moment balance about end point we get
F1*(0.483)+F2*(0.174)-11.5*9.8*1.15
F1*(0.483)+F2*(0.174)=129.605
so from this two equation we get
F1=412.958N( force by left hand) (upward)
F2=401.458N (force by right hand )(downward)
