Question

Figure shows a block of mass m resting on a 20 slope. The block has coefficients of friction 0.75 and 0.51 with the surface. It is connected via a massless string over a massless, frictionless pulley to a hanging block of mass 2.0 kg.

Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Figure shows a block of mass m resting on a 20 slope. The block has coefficients of friction 0.75 and 0.51 with the surface. It is connected via a massless string over a massless, frictionless pulley to a hanging block of mass 2.0 kg. What is the minimum mass m that will stick and not slip? If this minimum mass is nudged ever so slightly, it will start being pulled up the incline. What acceleration will it have?

Explanation / Answer

a.) 2*g=mgsin20+0.75mgcos20

=> 2=m(sin20+0.75cos20)

=> m=2/(0.342+0.75*0.939)

=> m=2/(.342+.704)

=> m=1.91kg

F/m=a

F=mgsin20

a= 3.351N.
