ESSAY TOPIC:

Explain why the electric field between two parallel plates of a capacitor decreases when a dielectric is inserted if the capacitor is not connected to a power supply, but remains the same when it is connected to a power supply.

????????

Essay answers are limited to about 500 words (3800 characters maximum, including spaces).

Explanation / Answer

When capacitor is not connected and we insert a dielectric opposite harges are induced in the dielectric . This charge creates a electric field in the opposite ditrection of the field of the capacitor and hence decreass the field.

When we have a source connected The potential of the plates is fixed to V.

Electric field is always V/d , since V and d are constant E wont change.
