What are the hazards and safe handling procedures/disposal methods of the following reagents:
Aq Sodium bicarbonate Diethyl ether Acetone Hydrochloric acid Calcium chloride Iron(iii) chloride Vanillin Benzophenone Benzoic acid Salicyclic acid O-toluic acid 4-hydroxy-benzoic acid What are the hazards and safe handling procedures/disposal methods of the following reagents:
Aq Sodium bicarbonate Diethyl ether Acetone Hydrochloric acid Calcium chloride Iron(iii) chloride Vanillin Benzophenone Benzoic acid Salicyclic acid O-toluic acid 4-hydroxy-benzoic acid
Aq Sodium bicarbonate Diethyl ether Acetone Hydrochloric acid Calcium chloride Iron(iii) chloride Vanillin Benzophenone Benzoic acid Salicyclic acid O-toluic acid 4-hydroxy-benzoic acid

Explanation / Answer

1) Aq Sodium bicarbonate -It is also known as baking soda,is a weak base.It is less harmful chemical,only exposure to large quantity may be hazardous;

-If ingested it can severely irritate gastrointestinal tract

-can cause redness, pain and irritation on contact with eye and damaged skin

safe handling includes use of safety gloves, protective clothing and safety goggles to avoid contact.Keep in a cool area away from heat, moisture and acids.

safe disposal: vacuum cleaning and sweeping with water if spilled in local area, must be disposed in the chemical disposable bins only or flushed with water.

2 Diethyl ether-

hazards:

-highly flammable organic liquid, and must be kept away from heat hot surfaces or flame.

-It forms explosive peroxides when exposed to light and air.

-It reacts readily and explosively .with halogens and strong oxidizers like nitric acid

-When inhaled it may cause sedation or even respiratory failure

-Irritates eye, skin and also effects nervous system on long exposure

Handling:-must be stored in an air -permeable container but in dark at a temperature below 30 deg C.

-keep away from flammables ,and oxidizing agents.

-safety goggles, protective clothing must be worn for safe handling

disposal: -Immediately arrange for disposal if spilled out of the container,as peroxides may have formed in contact with air and light

-manage under hazardous waste control guidelines
