Question

You've made the finals of the Science Olympics! As one of your tasks, you're given 2.0g of copper and asked to make a wire, using all the metal, with a resistance of 1.8? . Copper has a density of 8900 kg/m3.
1. What length will you choose for your wire? Express your answer using two significant figures.
2. What diameter will you choose for your wire? Express your answer using two significant figures. You've made the finals of the Science Olympics! Explanation / Answer

We know, mass = 2g

Density = 8.9 g / cc

thus, volume = mass / density = 0.2247 cm^3 = 224.7 mm^3

Now,

Volume = length * area = L * (pi * R^2) = L * A

Resistivity of copper = 1.68 * 10^-5 ohm -mm

Resistance = rho (L / A)

Thus, L / A = Resistance / (resistivity) = 1.8 / 1.68 * 10^-5

= 1.07142 * 10^5 / mm

Thus, L / A * (LA ) = L^2 = 24075000 mm^2

L = 4906.628 mm

Length = 4.906 m

Area = 224.7 / 4906.6 = 0.045795 mm^2 = (pi) * R^2

Thus, R^2 = 0.014577

R = 0.1207 mm

Thus, diameter 0.2414 mm
