Three RC circuits have the emf, resistance, and capacitance given in the accompanying table. Initially, the switch on the circuit is open and the capacitor is uncharged. Part A Rank these circuits in order of decreasing initial current (immediately after the switch is closed). Rank from largest to smallest. To rank items as equivalent, overlap them. Part B Rank these circuits in order of decreasing time for the capacitor to acquire half its final charge. Rank from largest to smallest. To rank items as equivalent, overlap them.

Explanation / Answer

PART A:: I(t=0)=E/R

CIRCUIT A ::I(t=0)=12/4=3

CIRCUIT B ::I(t=0)=9/3=3

Initial current in circuit A and circuit B is same whereas initial current in circuit C is less

Hence decreasing order is CIRCUIT A=CIRCUIT B>CIRCUIT C

PART B:: TIME CONSTANT=RC

CIRCUIT A TIME CONSTANT=4*3=12

CIRCUIT B TIME CONSTANT=3*1=3

CIRCUIT C TIME CONSTANT=9*2=18

Decreasing order is CIRCUIT C>CIRCUIT A>CIRCUIT B
