When the double-throw switch S is open as shown in the figure, the current in the battery is 1.00 mA. When the switch is closed in position a, the current in the battery is 1.22 mA. Ohm's Law : V=IR
Case1 - switch is open
Total Resistance = R1+R2+R3
V=I(R1+R2+R3)
9 = (1*10^-3)(R1+R2+R3).........................(1)
Case2 - switch in position a
Total Resistance = R1+0.5R2+R3
V = I(R1+0.5R2+R3)
9 = (1.22*10^-3)(R1+0.5R2+R3).................(2)
Case 3 -switch in position b
Total Resistance = R1+R2
V = I(R1+R2)
9 = (1.96*10^-3)(R1+R2)...........................(3)
Solve (1),(2) and (3) we get
R1 = 1.346 kohms
R2 = 3.245 kohms
R3 = 4.408 kohms
