A battery with emf = 9.00 V and no internal resistance supplies current to the circuit shown in the figure below. When the double-throw switch S is open as shown in the figure, the current in the battery is 1.00 mA. When the switch is closed in position a, the current in the battery is 1.22 mA. When the switch is closed in position b, the current in the battery is 1.96 mA. Find the resistance R1. Find the resistance R2. Find the resistance R3.

Ohm's Law : V=IR

Case1 - switch is open

Total Resistance = R1+R2+R3

V=I(R1+R2+R3)

9 = (1*10^-3)(R1+R2+R3).........................(1)

Case2 - switch in position a

Total Resistance = R1+0.5R2+R3

V = I(R1+0.5R2+R3)

9 = (1.22*10^-3)(R1+0.5R2+R3).................(2)

Case 3 -switch in position b

Total Resistance = R1+R2

V = I(R1+R2)

9 = (1.96*10^-3)(R1+R2)...........................(3)


Solve (1),(2) and (3) we get

R1 = 1.346 kohms

R2 = 3.245 kohms

R3 = 4.408 kohms
