Question
Your beighbor has a cute Bichon-Frise puppy. assume air is 80% Nitrogen and 20% Oxygen.( nitrogen atomic weight is 14 and Oxygen atomic weight is 16)
you have inflated your bike tire to 700Kpa and the tire has a volume of 2.0 liters.( one liter =1000 cubic centimeters) and the temperature is 18C.
a. how many grams of air does the tire contain?
b. you suddenly realize that your tire can't exceed a pressure of 500Kpa when the temperature is 28C. How many grams of air should be removed so that your tire is safe?
Explanation / Answer
A)Pressure P=700000 pascals
=6.908 atm
Volume V=2 litres
Temperature T=18 C=291 K
Molecular weight M=(80x14+20x16)/100
=1120+320/100
=14.40
Mass of air present=PVM/RT
=(6.908)(2)(14.40)/(0.0821)(291)
=8.327 gm
B)pressure P=500000 pascals
=4.934 atm
Temperature T=301 K
So maximum mass of air that can be present =(4.934)(2)(14.40)/(0.0821)(301)
=5.75 gm
So mass of air that should be removed =8.327-5.75
=2.58 gm
