Question

A particle undergoes two displacements, mea- sured from the positive x-axis, with counter- clockwise positive. The first has a magnitude of 11 m and makes an angle of 65 degrees with the positive x-axis.  The resultant displacement has a magnitude of 10.1m directed at an angle of 122 degrees from the positive x-axis. *find the magnitude of the second displacement in meters.

Explanation / Answer

d1 = 11 cos 65 i + 11 sin 65 j = 4.6488 i + 9.969 j

d2 = ???

d = d1 + d2

d = 10.1* cos 122 i + 10.1 sin 122 j =-5.352 i + 8.565 j

so

-5.352 i + 8.565 j = 4.6488 i + 9.969 j + d2

d2 = -10 i -1.404 j

magnitude = 10.098 m
