Question

For each of the following statements, indicate whether it is true, false or cannot tell. Use cannot tell if the statement can either be true or false.

A) Electric charges of the same sign also have the same magnitude.

B) Two small conducting spheres attract one another electrostatically. At least one sphere is charged.

C) Electric charges of the opposite sign attract each other.

D) A negative charge that is in an electric field, E, experiences a force that is in the same direction as E.

E) Experimental evidence indicates that charge is quantized and conserved.

Explanation / Answer

A) FALSE, obviously. Nature of charge has nothing to do with magnitude.

B) TRUE, at least one sphere has to be charged to attract the another, unless both +ve and -ve charges can be maintained on a single sphere.

C) TRUE, laws of nature

D) FALSE, an electric field is defined to be positive when it repels a test +ve charge, i.e. force on the +ve charge acts along direction of field. It willl be opposite for -ve.

E) TRUE, A physical quantity is quantized if measured values can only take on discrete values- energies of bound electrons, for example. A conserved quantity is one that does not change over time. Charge is quantized as it always has to be a multiple of e , charge on an electron. And charge is also conserved as charge transfer always takes place by transfer of some charged particles, hence charge lost on one side is equal to gain at the other, hence total remains same.
