Question
Note 4rx10Tm'/c and& 10m/s. Show relevant work clearly A long straight wire carries an electrical current horizontally due South through a room shielded from the Earth's magnetic field. At a point o, 4.0cm due East of the center of the wire, a Cao ion ofcharge e # 1.6 x 10." C & mass m 1.2× 10-a kg travels straight North with a velocity of 1.0x10'm/s. The strength of the magnetic field the current induces is found to be 2x10T I. Consider what happens at this point (a) What is the direction of the magnetic field induced by the wire's current? (b) What is the magnitude of the magnetic force on the Ceo ion? (c) What would be the direction of this force on Coo? (d) What would be the magnitude of the Earth's gravitational force on this ion? (e) What would be the magnitude of the acceleration of this ion? (0 What would be the direction of this acceleration of this ion? (see over)Explanation / Answer
(a) using right hand thumb rule,
direction of magnetic field is directed outward from the plane of paper.
(b) F= qVB= 1.6*10^-19*10^5*2*10^-3= 3.2*10^-17 N
c) using right hand palm rule the direction of force is towards the wire.
(d) as the room is shielded from earth earth gravitational field hence no impact would be observed of gravitational magnetic field on charged particle.
e) a=F/m= 3.2*10^-17/(1.2*10^-24)= 2.67*10^7 m/s^2
(f) direction is same as that of force in ...(c)
