Question

we consider the view that says the environment consists of resources for human beings to make use of. If human beings are the only creatures of moral value, then we do not do anything morally wrong if we deplete a specific resource, cause a species to go extinct, or destroy the habitat of living creatures. We might still do moral wrong in our treatment of the environment if our actions cause harm to human beings, but we have no moral responsibility to anything other than humans on this view.

Using this approach to environmental ethics, explain how we would view the problem of endangered species from this perspective. You may also evaluate the approach, but the main point is to demonstrate that you can apply this specific approach to an environmental issue.

Explanation / Answer

Environmental world view is the set of assumptions and values reflecting the thinking of an individual about how the world is working and individual’s role in the world. Environmental ethics are the beliefs about the right or wrong things in treating the environment and are a most important element of the world view. The basic beliefs imparted with ethics relating to the environment or as follows:

1. Why should one care about the environment?

2.Are individuals are important beings on the planet or are just one of the earth’s millions of life forms?

3.What measures must be taken to protect or to do not cause harm for the extinction of any other species? Is anyone or all species must be protected? How do they can be selected?

4.Is each individual has an ethical obligation to promote the extraordinary natural world for the future generations or the nature as good as it received by the current generation?

5.Should every individual mush show equal concern and protect the environment from the hazards regardless of gender, age, nationality, income, social status or any other factor?

6.Should every individual must be part of the central ethical and political issue or environmental justice movement? How one can promote the sustainability?

The basic beliefs presented above are not consistent with the answers given to question 6 because, every individual has a role to protect the environment, natural resources and other living forms and should not cause any harm to disturb the natural systems. Hence, every individual must have a good idea about the world view to preserve and protect the natural systems for the future generations.

Endangered species is a species living with limited numberof animals or organisms that may undergo extinction within short period. Conservation of endangered species is required to maintain the species for longer periods. The methods used for conservation are evluated and monitored carefully. For example, for the conservation of black rhinos, and endangered species worldwide certain genetic factors must be considered. Captive breeding programs like ex situ conservation must be carried out. The endangered animals are maintained in an artificial location different from the original habitat. Genetic management strategies like utilization of DNA markers for the identification of genetically varied individuals, maintenance of pedigree records to avoid the mating of closely related animals and artificial insemination techniques are very helpful for the conservation of genetic diversity of the endangered species.
