Question
Two ice skaters, with masses of 40.0kg and 75.0kg , are at the center of a 50.0m -diameter circular rink. The skaters push off against each other and glide to opposite edges of the rink.
If the heavier skater reaches the edge in 30.0s
how long does the lighter skater take to reach the edge?
Explanation / Answer
velocity of heavy skater = 50/30 = 5/3 m/s
Since no external force is applied,
Net momentum is consevered.
Initial momentum=0
Final momentum = m1v1+m2v2 =40v1 + 75*(5/3)
Final momentum = Initial momentum
40v1 + 75*(5/3)=0
v1=125/40=25/8
Time taken to reach the end of diameter = 50/(25/8)=16 sec
