Question

P-waves move at 8.5 km/s and S-waves move at 5 km/s. If the P-waves passes through a city 90 seconds before the S-wave, how far away did the earthquake occur?

A 0.65kg cord is tied between 2 trees 4meter apart. The tension in the cord in 240N. How long does it take for the wave to travel from 1 tree to the other?

You have a spring constant 200N/m. It has 100g mass at the end. In Lewis Hall, what is the period of the pendulum? You then take this pendulum tot he moon and mesure the period again. What is the new period? Moon gravity is one sixth of the Earths.

Please explain

Explanation / Answer

1) distance of earth quake site= (v2-v1)*t=(8.5-5)*90=315 Km

2) mu=m/L=0.65/4

==> v=sqrt(T/mu)=sqrt(240*4/0.65)=38.43 m/s

==> t= d/v=4/38.43=0.104 sec

3) T=2*pi*sqrt(m/k)=2*pi*sqrt(0.1/200)= 0.14 sec

Time period on moon will be the same
