Question

                    A Boeing 747-400 commercial jet aircraft has a maximum takeoff mass of 396,890 kg, a typical

                    take-off speed of 180 MPH, and an effective wing area of 524.90 m^2.

                    From this data estimate the average speed of the air over the top of the wing at takeoff

                    Assume that the speed of the air underneath the wings is the same as the airspeed of the plane.

                    Given: 1 m/s = 2.236 MPH, density of air = 1.29 kg/m^3

Explanation / Answer

Here

Pressure Difference = Force/Areaof two wings

= (396890*9.8)/(524.90*2)

= 3705.01 Pa

Pressure Difference = 0.5*p*(V2^2-v1^2)

3705.01 = 0.5*1.29*((180/2.236)^2 - V^2)

V = 27.13 m/sec = 60.66 MPH
