A laser beam with vacuum wavelength 632.8 nm is incident from air onto a block of Lucite as shown in the figure below. The line of sight of the photograph is perpendicular to the plane in which the light moves. (Assume that the incidence angle is 61 degree , and the refraction angle is 32 degree .) Find the speed of the light in the Lucite. Find the frequency of the light in the Lucite. Find the wavelength of the light in the Lucite.Explanation / Answer
Using Snell's Law we have 1*sin(61) = n*sin(32)
=> n = sin(61)/sin(32) = 1.65
b) we have lambda = lambda0/n
= 632.8nm/1.65 = 383.51 nm
c) frequency doesn't change so f = c/lambda0
= 3.00x10^8/632.8x10^-9
= 4.74x10^14 Hz
d) n = c/v
so v = c/n
= 3.00x10^8/1.65
= 1.818x10^8 m/s
