Question

what am i doing wrong?

While on a camping trip, you would like to carry water from the lake to your campsite. You have two nonidentical buckets which you attach to a 1.67 m long rod. Since the buckets are not identical, you find that the rod balances about a point 5.59 cm from its midpoint, as shown below. The weight of the rod and empty buckets are negligible compared to the weight of the water. Which bucket holds more water? Fill in the blank: The heavier bucket contains_% more water than the lighter bucket.

Explanation / Answer

Bucket 1 holds more water

Torque = 0

net torque = distance from center* bucket 1 water weight - distance from center* bucket 1 water weight = 0

as distance from center to bucket 1 is less, weight of bucket 1 must be more.

Distance of bucket 1 from center = 167/2 - 5.59 = 77.91 cms

Distance of bucket 2 from center = 167/2 + 5.59 = 89.09 cms

let weight of bucket 1 be w1 and bucket 2 be w2

so 77.91*w1 = 89.09*w2

so w1/w2 = 1.1435

So bucket 1 has more water

percentage water = 100*(w1-w2)/w2 = 100(1.1435 - 1 ) = 14.35 percent
