Question

Suppose a crate of mass 4.0 kg is placed on the plank in the figure below at a distance

from the left end. If the plank has a mass of 12 kg, find the forces exerted by the two supports on the plank. (Indicate the direction with the sign of your answer.)

Whats the left support?

Whats the right support?

Suppose a crate of mass 4.0 kg is placed on the plank in the figure below at a distance x = 3.2 m from the left end. If the plank has a mass of 12 kg, find the forces exerted by the two supports on the plank. Whats the left support? Whats the right support?

Explanation / Answer

Let the forces be a and b

applying force balance

so a+b = (4+12)*g= 160 (taking g =10m/s^2)

applying torque balance about the cnetre or rod we get

3.5*a + (6.5-x)*40 - 3.5*b=0

3.5*a + (6.5-3.2)*40 - 3.5*b=0

Two equations and two unknows...solve it to get a and b which will be the answer
