Question

A transformer consisting of two coils wrapped around an iron core is connected to a generator and a resistor, as shown in the drawing. There are 13 turns in the primary coil and 23 turns in the secondary coil. The peak voltage in the resistor is 64 V. What is the peak emf of the generator?

Explanation / Answer

In a transformer if n1 is the number of primary turns and n2 is the number of secondary turns

then,

n1/n2 = v1/v2

v2= peak voltage of resistor = 64v

then,

13/23 = v/64

v = 13*64/23

= 36.17 volts

Peak emf of generator = 36.17 volts
